"SULFIDE MINE ON THE YELLOWDOG PLAINS"
by C. Fred Rydholm, Marquette, Michigan

Fred just toured our shop with friends... He's an author & former mayor - and makes quite a case for protecting the U.P. from this dangerous exploitation.

Take Action!

Proposed sulfide mine threatens Michigan's wilderness - you can help.

March 2007

Michigan's Upper Peninsula is one of those vanishing wild areas which industrialization & urbanization have yet to defile. Ken & I have seen moose amble across the road as we walk our dogs...  Last year a mama black bear chased the local hooligans from the woods in back of our house...

There have been major onslaughts on this environment in the past by copper extractors and logging giants, but now a corporation wants to locate a metallic sulfide mine in the heart of the Yellow Dog Plains. And with our State hard hit by an economic collapse & willing to attract industry by any means, the company is ramming its way through red tape to do it.

The problem: Sulfide mining process produces Acid Mine Drainage -- deemed one of the most serious threats to water quality by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

To give you an idea of what we're up against, try to visualize this scenario happening to your favorite fishing/hunting or get-away spot: "... crushing (sulfide ore) and exposing it to water and oxygen leads to a substance closely associated with battery acid. This acid makes it way through every crack and crevice and ultimately pollutes thousands of miles of rivers and streams every year..."

To help protect our rivers & wetlands from being turned into a battery acid wasteland, go to the "Save the Wild UP" website at www.savethewildup.org/  Their group has pulled together facts & news updates, and they will forward your comments to the politicians involved as well as local media.

At this moment, Michigan's DEQ (Dept. of Environmental Quality) is wavering in its decision to issue a permit to Kennecott to begin their operations. -- If you have ever visited the U.P. and enjoyed a bit of unspoiled beauty here, let the DEQ know your viewpoint. Thanks.
