April 11, 2003 Rebirth of Steam Rail Power
Reducing Runtime Costs to Zero or Less
Beginning in the 1700's and continuing through the 19th and 20th centuries, steam powered the industrial age worldwide. As widespread use of electricity and oil began to take hold in the early 20th century, electric motors and internal combustion engines soon became the engines of choice. At the same time, rail systems evolved from steam-piston to electric and diesel-electric hybrids. Today, with the rapidly rising global demand for oil, we see a parallel rise in fuel prices & pollution -- along with a proportional depletion of fuel resources. Some rail companies are taking the initiative to develop more efficient diesel and turbine hybrid locomotives to save on fuel costs and curtail emissions. Along these lines, PNGinc is developing a solution that promises to take rail technology to its ultimate goal -- low cost of operations and eventually zero pollution. At the heart of this new rail power system is a little-known technology: the Tesla/boundary layer turbine. Since the Tesla turbine is very low cost to manufacture, more robust than bladed turbines, and is able to run on any combustible fuel in steam mode, it is the perfect solution for rail systems of the 21st century. In fact, Tesla turbines are the only engines capable of reducing runtime costs to zero or less, when using a suitable recycled fuel such as used motor oil. The Tesla turbine, along with PNGinc's proprietary ultra-clean burner technology, is the perfect answer to today's high costs of running rail systems!
